Massage therapy is primarily a hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. It may be for treatment of a specific musculoskeletal problem or for the purpose of optimizing health.
Therapeutic Massage effect optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Improvement in function, mobility and a reduction in pain and stress are goals which may be achieved through massage therapy.
Modern massage techniques can be traced back to Swedish massage developed in the 1700’s, the first systematic method of therapeutic massage based on physiology. Massage Therapists may combine other soft tissue techniques, acupuncture, exercise prescription or other treatments with their applied knowledge of anatomy and physiology to achieve improved function and pain management for patients.
Massage Therapy Treatments
Before a treatment, the Massage Therapist will complete an assessment of a patient’s concerns and overall health. Once the assessment has been completed a treatment approach/ plan will be proposed, with patient consent.
Massage therapy can be done over clothes, or sheets or directly upon uncovered skin depending upon the nature of the problem and patient preference and comfort. A soothing lotion is used, that allows smooth manual technique but does not stain clothing.
Various specialized techniques using hands, arms and elbows, over the skin or clothes, make up the Massage Therapy treatment. The therapist will work with the patient’s pain tolerance during the treatment, and the treatment can be stopped at any time should the treatment become uncomfortable.
Massage therapy is covered by many private insurance companies as part of their extended health care plans.
